Make sure you watch the fabulous video above.

Over the last decade, technology has changed the way we work – making it easier and faster to do everything from building websites to computer graphics, from online video editing to Zoom conversations.

This was brought home to me in a recent telephone call from Stan Arnold of BlueSky Copywriting, based in Lanzarote. I’ve worked with Stan over the last ten years to produce a wide range of promotional material – from sales brochures to direct mailshots. But this was a new website which we’d be producing from a blank sheet of paper.

The client – Freddy’s Dreamland for Cats – provides food and water for over 300 cats at over 40 feeding stations every day in the south of Lanzarote, and has a terrific reputation, both locally and internationally.

The charity has fans and supporters all over the world and has just received a donation of a beautiful 9,000 sq m walled property – Dreamland – which now acts as Lanzarote’s first dedicated cat sanctuary.

Freddy and his team wanted to get all their messages and text written before starting the design and build stages. So I let Stan get on with the words while I looked at redesigning their logo.

I produced several versions of the logo which could be adapted to fit the media – print, website or video.

Working together with Stan, I used Adobe Premiere to edit the video, adjusting the audio track to key events in the video, and added the new logo and the intro and closing audio and graphics.

Stan and I worked together to develop a structure that helped me create a wireframe site which I sent to Freddy for approval. That gave me the feedback I needed to continue designing a modern mobile-friendly site on top of the wireframe, just as easily as if I was there on the spot.

For a typeface, we wanted something that would be easy to read and fast to load. I chose Google fonts Lato – which is bright and positive, in keeping with both Freddy’s and the charity’s attitude.

Photographs for the site were provided as hi-res shots from a mobile phone. These enabled us to prepare large ‘hero’ banners and photos within the copy – so we could showcase the cats and Dreamland with images that worked well on both desktop and mobile.

We choose 20i.com for hosting, as they have great Content Delivery Network (CDN) capabilities in their standard service. This means the site will load fast around the world, important as Freddy’s supporters are global!

The response to the finished website from Freddy and his team was as good as I could wish for.

This project was a perfect example of how, with modern technology, you can work smoothly with people over 2000 miles away and still deliver a quality product that does exactly what the client needs.
